With my older child, Alex, starting school last week, I’ve found myself spending considerably more time with my 2-year-old, Max. To my surprise, I realized I hardly knew this little guy! Since his birth, he’s often been in a carrier, accompanying us on our daily adventures. Fortunately, Max is a cheerful and sociable child, rarely complaining or getting my attention amidst the hustle and bustle caused by his older brother. Now that Alex is in school all day, I finally have the opportunity to connect with Max on a deeper level. Here are nine activities I can enjoy with my toddler now that his sibling is at school.
1. Engage in Uninterrupted Conversation
I’ve discovered that Max has quite a bit to express. I previously thought he was quiet, but now I realize he was just “overlooked” in the noise of family life.
2. Refresh My Memory
I might need to look up Max’s middle name, as it currently escapes me.
3. Experiment with New Foods
Max often misses out on trying new dishes because Alex is quick to declare certain meals “gross.” It turns out Max is quite flexible with his food preferences.
4. Observe His Features
I’ve noticed that Max has striking blue eyes that I had overlooked in the chaos of daily life.
5. Allow Him to Wake Up Naturally
Max can now enjoy waking from his nap on his own terms rather than being startled awake by his brother’s exuberant antics.
6. Play Freely
I can engage in peaceful playtime without the interference of superhero battles disrupting our carefully constructed toy setups.
7. Discover His Social Circle
During a recent visit to the park, I was pleasantly surprised to see Max interact with another child, saying “Hi, Lily,” as he joined her in the sandbox.
8. Learn His Skills
I can ask Max who taught him to use a fork. It appears that while Alex monopolized dinner conversations, Max quietly mastered this skill on his own.
9. Enjoy Bath Time
Bathing Max has become a calmer experience without the risk of being splashed by an overly enthusiastic sibling.
It’s refreshing to connect with Max, who patiently entertained himself while I navigated sibling dynamics. I’m discovering that he has a vibrant personality and a lot to share, at least until the clock strikes 2:30 PM.
