An Open Letter to the Driver Speeding Down My Street

Dear Speedster,

I urge you to please SLOW DOWN. While I’m unable to shout this at you due to my two young children playing at the front of our home, the urge to express my frustration is overwhelming. I want to shield my children from such language; they’ve already been exposed to it more than I care to admit, and I certainly don’t want the neighbors to think of me that way.

As my son colors with sidewalk chalk and my daughter, ever the adventurer, attempts to break free from my grasp, I find myself increasingly anxious about your reckless driving. It’s my role to ensure their safety, but your speed makes that task much more daunting. Can’t you just take it easy? We often avoid playing in our front yard because of the dangers you pose.

The speed limit on our street is 25 mph, yet you frequently zoom past at much higher speeds. I’ve noticed you distracted, either chatting on your phone or texting while driving.

Sometimes, you’re a young man, music blasting as you drive by, seemingly preoccupied with a message from your girlfriend. I happen to know her, and I wonder if her mother is aware of your driving habits. I think I’ll call her later. Seriously, please SLOW DOWN.

At other times, you’re an older woman behind the wheel of a Buick, surprising me with your speed in an area filled with children. Have you no concern for the well-being of kids? You’ve been kind to my children in brief encounters, yet I wonder if the thought of an accident ever crosses your mind. I really don’t want to label you as reckless, but please, SLOW DOWN.

Occasionally, you’re a fellow parent driving a minivan with your own precious little ones onboard. It’s astonishing that you would speed past my children as if it were inconsequential. I understand life can be hectic, but your haste makes me uneasy. SLOW DOWN.

There are also middle-aged men who wave cheerily at me as they pass. You mistake my flailing, frantic gestures for a friendly greeting when in fact, I’m just trying to signal that you need to SLOW DOWN.

It seems you are completely unaware of how fast you’re traveling. I know my children and watch them closely, but why can’t you adhere to the posted speed limits? We’ve done our part to ensure the safety of our neighborhood, yet you continue to treat our street like a racetrack.

So, to all those speeding drivers out there, from one concerned parent to another: Please, SLOW DOWN. Don’t be surprised if I eventually express my frustrations more vocally; it’s something you’ve certainly earned.
