As the summer days begin to dwindle, it’s time to brace ourselves for another school year ahead. Recently, I overheard one of my son’s classmates asking if he had picked up his school supplies yet. My son looked utterly confused, clearly unaware that the carefree days of summer were coming to a close. I can relate to his denial; I’ve been avoiding the reality of back-to-school shopping as well. Unfortunately, this means yet another year of rummaging through the remnants at Target after the organized parents have snatched up all the trendy items.
It’s time for me to get it together, purchase those school supplies, and embrace the excitement of the upcoming year! My reluctance to accept this change may have cost my son his preferred Trapper Keepers, but it doesn’t mean the school year has to be a disaster. The time for my lack of enthusiasm is over; we have a fresh year filled with opportunities for learning and fun ahead.
What better way to kick off a new year than by setting resolutions to make it the best one yet? Here are my goals for the upcoming academic year:
- I will take a lovely photo of all my children on their first day of school. This is non-negotiable. I’m determined to capture a picture worthy of social media, and I’ll also aim to snap one on the last day of school for those adorable side-by-side comparisons.
- Picture day will not slip my mind. This year, I will remember to schedule haircuts in advance and fill out the order forms the night before, instead of scrambling at the last minute. I’ll also ensure that the school photos are displayed or given as gifts, rather than hiding them away in a drawer.
- No child will go to bed without knowing precisely where their shoes are located. This strategy will save us from the chaos of frantic searches in the morning. Bonus points for anyone who helps match socks before school starts, which will eliminate the dreaded sock basket altogether.
- I will check my son’s backpack regularly, though not every single night. This will help avoid the embarrassing discovery of a forgotten sandwich rotting away under old papers.
- I will sign all permission slips diligently. I learned the hard way last year that neglecting to sign a field trip slip can lead to unexpected adventures, like my son bonding with the school librarian.
- I will read everything I sign. An over-correction for my previous slip-up has led to a habit of signing everything blindly—a practice I’ve come to regret.
- My teenage daughters will agree to a pact to avoid morning conflicts. If they do engage in disputes over hairbrushes or shoes, the loser will be responsible for cleaning out their younger sibling’s backpack.
- I will give thoughtful gifts to my children’s teachers. I apologize to past teachers for the hasty gifts they received; this year, I’ll at least attempt to pair a lottery ticket with some chocolate!
- I will refrain from yelling at my children before school. No matter how late we are running, the last thing they should hear from me ought to be a tone of encouragement, not frustration.
- I will remind myself that the school days are long and demanding. My children face more pressure than we did, so I will practice patience and provide them with the support they need to unwind after a tough day.
So, bring on the new school year! Our family is ready, provided we can get our school supplies sorted out in time.
