Dear Young One,
This morning began with the best of intentions. The sun streamed through the window, the cheerful chirping of birds filled the air, and I savored my new coffee, which tasted nothing short of bliss. I was so enamored by the moment that I contemplated reaching out to the grower in Antigua to express my gratitude. What could possibly disrupt such a perfect day?
Then you woke up.
The moment the screen flickered with a dancing cat instead of your favorite cartoon character, your face morphed into a portrait of discontent. Your lips quivered, and soon, a cacophony of cries filled the air, loud enough to set off the neighbor’s alarm system.
The intensity of your tantrum escalated rapidly. You began to pace, pointing your tiny fingers and shouting, “MOM! NO! MOM! NO! NO, CAT!” Your fierce determination reminded me of a character from a horror film—I almost considered calling a film studio for a casting call. Suddenly, your body turned rigid, and you marched through the living room like a tiny soldier. In another reality, this might have been amusing, but in my world, it disrupted my tranquil morning.
As any parent can attest, a day that kicks off with a tantrum often spirals downward from there. You had no interest in being the well-mannered child depicted in social media posts; you had your own agenda. I could almost hear the title “World’s Most Frustrated Parent” being whispered in the air.
There was a brief interlude of peace when your favorite theme song finally played, transforming you into a perfect little princess. The reference to a “soap box” might be lost on you; it harks back to a time when children were simply grateful to listen to old radio tunes and walk through the snow without complaint.
When lunch arrived, I foolishly allowed you to explore the pantry. Surely, there must have been something you’d enjoy, right? Wrong. With a plethora of chicken noodle soup and boxes of macaroni and cheese available, you were devastated to discover the absence of Beefaroni.
Before I could even consider calling Chef Boyardee, you were on the floor, performing what I could only describe as a possessed interpretive dance. Your screams were so loud that even the dog sought refuge. In that moment, it was hard to believe that this flailing creature was indeed my child.
Attempts to console you were futile. You struggled through bites of grilled cheese and even swatted my hand away when I tried to feed you soup. By the end, I looked like a canvas splashed with the remnants of your culinary rebellion. Some might call you a free spirit, but I had other words in mind.
As the clock ticked down to nap time, I hoped you would soon succumb to slumber. On most days, you would be so exhausted by this time that you’d almost doze off standing. However, today you decided that sleep was for the weak. Your energy seemed infinite, much like a toy that incessantly plays annoying tunes at the worst hours.
After two hours without a nap, my patience waned. You transformed from a screeching zombie to a little tyrant. After enduring your fifth plastic toy being thrown in my direction and hearing “NO!” for the millionth time, I reached my breaking point. It was time for a nap or I might just pack my bags and leave.
You finally drifted off, as if under some powerful spell. Part of me wanted to pick you up and cradle you to sleep, but that desire evaporated the moment you kicked me in the face.
Enjoy your nap, dear child.
You woke just in time for your father’s arrival home from work. The sight of a red lollipop in his hand instead of a green one? Well, that was the final straw.
Dear Young One, I can only say—your tantrums can be overwhelming. But with your dad home, I’m reclaiming a moment for myself.
