Dear Child,
Recently, I compiled some guidance for a potential sister you might have in the future—just a collection of insights I’ve gathered over time. Many have since asked about advice for you, my imaginary son. It’s a thought I hadn’t contemplated until now, but should you come into existence, we’ll both need some direction. Here’s my inaugural attempt to help you traverse the complexities of life.
Love,
Mom
Love and Regrets
First and foremost, I hope you’ll love me back. I’m trying my hardest, even when it doesn’t seem like it. And yes, I regret not getting you a dog.
Athleticism vs. Music
As for athleticism, our family’s peak performance was me missing the ball at tee-ball practice. Perhaps consider picking up a musical instrument instead? Drummers tend to be popular with girls, and they get to sit down while they play, which aligns well with our family traditions.
Math Skills
I’m optimistic that math skills are like twins—they skip a generation. So, you might be a math genius or at least able to calculate an 18% tip without relying on an app. If not, there’s always an app for that.
Shared Experiences
Though I’m genuinely trying to understand Star Wars, I must admit it’s a mystery I may never solve. However, I promise to take you to your first concert; it’ll be a shared experience, much like the ones I had with your grandparents and my sister.
Emotional Expression
Emotions are meant to be expressed, so never hold back. Remember, men who can show vulnerability are often seen as attractive. Be that son!
Understanding Relationships
Familiarize yourself with the basics of anatomy, especially how to navigate the complexities of relationships. And who knows? I might even hope for you to be part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Love and Tattoos
When you love someone, declare it openly. Love is fleeting, so embrace it wholeheartedly. I’m indifferent about tattoos, but just promise to keep me in the loop. Daily check-ins would be nice!
Thanksgiving and Music
Thanksgiving will be our tradition every year. And as for music, be sure to explore artists like Big Star, Velvet Underground, and early Bruce Springsteen.
Friendships and Trust
If you ever attribute a woman’s mood to her menstrual cycle, I will make sure you experience a similar monthly “challenge.” Scars are a testament to our experiences—embrace them, even the ones from minor medical procedures.
Accepting Differences
You will undoubtedly have friends I may not like. That’s normal, so trust your instincts and distance yourself if needed. If you can’t recall why you’re keeping an item, it’s likely time to let it go.
Cinematic Masterpieces
In our household, we consider The Apartment a cinematic masterpiece. And remember, returning a phone call with a text message is not acceptable.
Health and Humor
You may need medication at some point. I apologize for that, but hopefully, you’ll inherit my good hair and sense of humor. And always show respect for Beyoncé; she holds a special place in our hearts.
Dancing and Manners
Dancing should be second nature, so find your rhythm, whether through lessons or just practice. It’s perfectly fine to hold doors open for others and to offer your seat to those who need it.
Timeless Manners
Manners are timeless. To remember the meaning of “vacillate,” envision yourself in front of a shelf of Vaseline—an unforgettable image!
Life Lessons
Fight for what matters, find solace in silence, and appreciate the beauty in life’s pauses. Master a signature dish that doesn’t rely on a microwave or grill. Embrace whiskey and let fear drive you to take bold steps.
Reading and Relationships
Read The Things They Carried, explore relationships in foreign languages, and don’t shy away from camp, college, or therapy. Honesty is vital, but it’s essential to remain kind.
Forgiveness and Protection
Learn to forgive; it’s crucial for personal growth. And please, use protection during intimate moments. Take time to clean your living space.
Celebrating Relationships
When you love someone, know their middle name, birthday, and handwriting. Celebrate your friends and allow them to celebrate you in return.
Communication is Key
While I may not excel in relationship advice (which could explain my current single status), I will say this: Communication is key. No one can read your mind.
I’m thinking of you now, and I love you dearly. I can’t wait for the day you might be mine.

In Summary
This letter embodies a collection of insights and life lessons for a future son. These reflections emphasize love, respect, emotional honesty, and the importance of communication in relationships. I look forward to potentially sharing these experiences with you.
