Our Favorite Classic TV Shows Are Making a Comeback

Before I adopted my two new furry companions, I almost named them Sam and Diane, but that idea was swiftly dismissed. The male pup is a big, charming fellow with a perpetual wagging tail, always ready for an adventure and quite the charmer. While he may not be the brightest, he’s certainly clever enough and has a knack for chasing balls, reminiscent of a certain legendary baseball player named Malone. Conversely, the female pup is a stunning but anxious whirlwind. She’s incredibly intelligent and beautiful, yet she often trips over her own enthusiasm. Interestingly, she has a soft spot for Pete—the name we ultimately chose for the boy dog, although that’s a tale for another time—even though he sometimes leads her astray.

So, imagine my excitement upon learning that Cheers is set to hit Broadway in 2016 with a production titled Cheers Live on Stage. According to Rolling Stone, CBS is developing this theatrical adaptation of our beloved bar and its quirky characters, and we can only hope to see appearances from Carla, Coach, Norm, Cliff, Dr. Frasier Crane, Woody, and Rebecca. Additionally, CBS is working on bringing other cherished reboots to the stage.

The Brady Bunch

Most of us grew up watching this timeless series in reruns after school, with Greg, Bobby, Peter, Marcia, Jan, and Cindy becoming like family. The Brady Bunch Movie in 1995, featuring Cheers star Shelley Long as Carol Brady, drew fans in droves. Now, CBS is planning to adapt this cult classic for the stage, although details remain unclear, so stay tuned for updates.

Corduroy

Who among us hasn’t cherished the classic 1968 tale by Don Freeman about a neglected teddy bear in a busy department store, missing a button on his overalls? This heartwarming story, which has touched generations, also inspired an animated series on PBS. CBS is now bringing Corduroy to Broadway, and we can already envision long lines of eager parents and children at the box office.

But there’s even more! CBS is in sync with current trends, reviving other beloved shows from the 1980s and ‘90s for our enjoyment.

Fuller House

Although I didn’t watch Full House during its original run (I was preoccupied with college), karma has a way of circling back. My children frequently watch reruns featuring Uncle Jesse, Rebecca, Joey, D.J., Stephanie, Michelle, and Mr. Tanner, making them feel like part of our family. Now, my daughters are ecstatic about Netflix’s reboot, Fuller House, which will bring back many original cast members for a 13-episode series, including John Stamos, Candace Cameron Bure, and Jodie Sweetin. The spin-off follows D.J., a pregnant veterinarian in San Francisco, who turns to her sister Stephanie, now a struggling musician, after her husband’s unexpected passing. Stamos is reportedly producing the show, while the Olsen sisters have opted out to focus on their fashion ventures.

Girl Meets World

The original ABC series Boy Meets World, featuring Ben Savage, aired from 1993 to 2000 and followed Cory Matthews from adolescence to adulthood. Now, The Disney Channel has revived this character in Girl Meets World, focusing on Cory’s daughter Riley, making it perfect for a new generation of viewers.

The X-Files

Recently, Gillian Anderson shared a photo of Scully and Mulder’s chairs on set, igniting excitement among longtime fans. Series creator Chris Carter has reunited Anderson and David Duchovny for a six-episode arc, returning to Fox at an unspecified date. This landmark series, which explored alien abductions and universal fears from 1993 to 2002, fundamentally changed television and paved the way for many other fantasy shows. We can’t wait to see if “the truth is out there” once again.

In summary, the world of television is buzzing with the revival of classic shows that shaped our childhoods. From Cheers to The Brady Bunch, Corduroy to Fuller House, and Girl Meets World to The X-Files, these reboots are set to bring nostalgia and enthusiasm back into our lives.
