Crafted a computer from scratch.
Swam alongside sharks.
Rappelled down sheer cliff faces.
Carried twins to full term, weighing a cumulative 15 pounds.
Expressed breast milk every two hours around the clock for 72 continuous hours.
And yet, we find ourselves defeated each year by the daunting challenge of summer camp registration.
The Timing Challenge
The first hurdle is timing. Some camps require parents to log on and complete registration forms as early as January, while others—like the countryside horseback riding camp—don’t announce their registration dates until spring. At one local event, a young-adult series reenactment hosted by a bookstore, parents even camp out overnight to secure spots for their children. Meanwhile, a popular gymnastics and swimming camp demands that parents send in registration forms via traditional mail by a specific date, with no early submissions allowed. Some parents go so far as to drive to a mailbox with a midnight pickup to ensure their registration is stamped first.
Aligning Interests and Logistics
Next comes the complex task of aligning each child’s age and interests with an appropriate camp, hoping to avoid excessive travel across town, while also coordinating drop-off and pick-up times. Frequently, the 5-year-olds cannot attend the same camps as their older siblings. Additionally, each camp offers sessions that start and end one week apart from others, leaving gaps in our schedules that necessitate reaching out to family or friends for child care.
The Financial Aspect
Lastly, there’s the financial aspect. Will we be able to afford the top-tier camps that promise to set our children on a path to success (or not)? Are we truly getting value for our money, or are these camps merely glorified babysitters? For instance, if the kids participate in group swim lessons instead of private sessions, is it worth the savings if they end up in the pool for only seven minutes?
It’s a precarious balancing act, akin to playing Jenga with our children’s summer plans.
