As we journey through parenthood with our five children, we have found that what once felt out of reach in our younger years is now within our grasp. With our teenagers capable of managing the household, we have the freedom to enjoy spontaneous dinners and social outings, something we hadn’t experienced since our early adulthood. Approaching our mid-30s, we often found ourselves grappling with the dual feelings of, “Isn’t it amazing that we can do this?” and “Are we too old for this?”
Questions about age often bubbled to the surface: Am I too old to stay out late? Too old to dance like no one’s watching? Too old to enjoy the music I love?
I vividly recall a night out in Las Vegas at the age of 34 when my husband, Mark, remarked, “We should enjoy this while we can; we won’t be doing this at 40.” At the time, that seemed like an overly cautious perspective. However, as I now approach my 40s, those once-clear boundaries are beginning to blur.
Recently, Mark and I took a short trip to Las Vegas where we attended a concert at the trendy Cosmopolitan Hotel. Dressed to impress, we arrived early to secure a good spot. To my surprise, a group of individuals in their 20s appeared, dressed similarly, as if responding to an unseen cue that I no longer sensed. Initially feeling out of place in my chic black dress, I chose to let go of my insecurities and fully embrace the moment. We danced, sang, and even splurged on overpriced drinks, leaving the event early to get a good night’s sleep.
In the past, I would have felt pressured to stay until closing time, but now I understand the concept of diminishing returns.
Last weekend, I reunited with my two best friends from high school, Mia and Sarah, for a much-needed getaway. With ten kids among us, we had never spent more than a night away together. To celebrate Sarah’s birthday, we booked affordable flights to Florida and stayed at my mother-in-law’s home in a retirement community on the Gulf coast. Our trip quickly became a “DGAF” (don’t give a fig) adventure; we embraced our bodies and indulged in mimosas every morning without a care in the world.
However, while enjoying drinks at an oceanfront tiki bar, we witnessed a lively dance floor filled with 80-somethings who were truly living in the moment. “These folks could teach us a thing or two about DGAF,” Mia noted, as we began to lighten up ourselves.
In the past, I often fixated on younger crowds, fearing that I had crossed into a territory deemed inappropriate for my age. Now, I find myself looking up to those slightly older than me, particularly those in their late 40s, who are reveling in their own fun without concern for judgment. I tell myself that I can do the same, blending confidence with optimism.
While there may be certain behaviors or fashions that are less suitable for a 37-year-old, I’ve long since moved past those concerns. At the concert in Vegas, I realized that I can’t pretend to be in my 20s, nor do I want to. I’ve simply stopped tuning in to that youthful frequency and embraced my own rhythm.
Aging is not merely about relinquishing activities; it’s about discovering new freedoms. You can opt for comfortable footwear instead of high heels, travel with the financial means to enjoy yourself, and choose when to party or when to rest without feeling regret.
Ultimately, the only limitations I face are self-imposed, based on my own mindset and how much I care about others’ opinions regarding my appearance or age. I’ve packed an abundance of joy into these past few years and have no intention of slowing down. I’m learning that opportunities to dance, enjoy late nights, or embrace life’s pleasures will always be available—at 40, 60, or even 80.

In summary, age should never dictate how much fun you can have. Embrace the freedom that comes with maturity, and remember that life’s joys are always within reach, regardless of how many candles are on your birthday cake.
