The Most Challenging Lesson I Faced as a Child

Do you recall your first taste of victory? For me, it was when I secured second place in the sixth-grade science fair. However, since all participants received a ribbon for first, second, or third place, the moment didn’t feel particularly monumental.

My project revolved around static electricity. This topic was entirely my own choice, though I can’t quite pinpoint why. Perhaps it was due to a captivating image I’d seen in a magazine, possibly Ranger Rick or Dynamite, showcasing a Van de Graaff generator—an intriguing device that creates an electric charge, making your hair stand on end when you touch it. I thought it would be an impressive centerpiece for my project. The challenge was acquiring such a device.

Enter my brilliant grandfather, a man with an extraordinary knack for creating and repairing anything. After I showed him the magazine picture, he eagerly accepted the challenge. A few weeks later, he arrived at our house with a remarkable miniature replica of the generator, almost identical to the original but with one significant difference.

“Why doesn’t it work?” I inquired, eagerly turning the small hand crank on the side, anticipating a hair-raising experience.

While my grandfather might have been a bit offended by my reaction, it was truly a reflection of my unwavering faith in his abilities. I genuinely believed that by merely presenting him with a picture, he could construct an electrostatic generator. To me, he was nothing short of a genius. Yet, with a science fair to win, I was hoping for a bit more excitement.

For reasons I can’t quite understand, I decided against including the replica generator in my presentation, rendering my science fair contribution rather lackluster. I adorned my designated display table with a sign I had spray-painted silver, boldly proclaiming “STATIC ELECTRICITY!!” and framed by lightning bolts. I also provided a basket filled with inflated balloons and various fabrics, inviting the judges to rub them together and experience the static shocks themselves. The real surprise of the day? I managed to snag a second-place ribbon despite it all.

You might be thinking that I got exactly what I deserved for relying on my grandfather’s work. That lesson has stuck with me over the years. Interestingly, two of the first-place winners that day showcased projects that were undeniably advantageous: one was a boy who presented on “surgical staples” and had his father, a surgeon, in scrubs demonstrating a video of the process behind him; the other was a boy who decided to display “video games” by simply setting up his Atari console. Talk about an easy crowd-pleaser.

Another takeaway? Life often isn’t fair, and we all navigate it as best we can, sometimes leaning on others for help.

In summary, my childhood experience at the science fair taught me that while effort and originality are vital, sometimes external factors and the support of others can significantly influence outcomes.
