Dear Young Adults,

I would like to address a small misunderstanding that seems to have arisen regarding household responsibilities. In your earlier years, there were many tasks that I understood were beyond your capabilities due to size and experience. However, as you’ve matured, there is now much you can contribute to the upkeep of our home.

Yet, it appears that such contributions have been minimal, leading me to reflect on why I find myself shouldering the majority of the household chores. I’ve come to realize that it may not be simply a lack of motivation on your part, but rather a genuine concern for my well-being. Perhaps you worry that if you take on some of the cleaning, I might feel insulted. Rest assured, I have been managing the cleaning duties for years, and I am confident in my abilities.

Another possibility is that you fear I might actually have some free time and become bored if I am not as occupied with chores. Let me assure you, boredom has not been a part of my life since your arrival, and I can easily fill any extra time with various fulfilling activities.

It also occurs to me that amidst the busyness of life, I may not have formally communicated that you now have my full permission to take on chores previously deemed too advanced. If this has been holding you back, consider this your official invitation to help out!

Here are some specific tasks that you are perfectly capable of handling:

  • Recycling: Next time you finish a soda or snack, feel free to toss the empty container into the recycling bin instead of leaving it for me.
  • Laundry: I understand that sometimes I might not have time to wash your favorite outfit daily. You are more than welcome to manage your own laundry whenever you wish, especially since I’ve demonstrated how to sort and operate the washing machine.
  • Dishes: Instead of placing your dirty cups in the sink, it would take just a moment to load them into the dishwasher, which is conveniently located right next to the sink. You could even do this during a commercial break!
  • Dishwasher: If you open the dishwasher and find it full of clean dishes, feel free to put them away. This will create space for your dirty dishes.
  • Vacuuming: I know the vacuum can be intimidating due to its noise, but with your earbuds, you can easily drown out the sound. Trust me, you are much louder than any vacuum!
  • Toilet Cleaning: I’ve cleaned up after you for years, so I would be thrilled to see you take on this task when the need arises.

These are merely a few examples, as there are many more chores to consider, including mopping, dusting, and organizing. If you ever want to try your hand at any of these tasks, remember that I am always here to support you. I might be surprised, but I assure you I won’t be upset.

I’m pleased we could have this conversation, and I hope you feel empowered to contribute more around the house. Now, how about tackling some chores?

With love,
Mom
