10 Reasons I Can’t Answer the Phone Right Now

As a new mother, I’ve come to realize that my ability to communicate over the phone has drastically diminished. A friend recently joked about this transformation, but the truth is, it’s quite accurate. Before having a baby, I was always eager to catch up and chat for hours. Now, I find myself in situations where I can’t possibly answer the phone. Here’s why:

  1. I intended to call you, but my baby had a massive spit-up incident, requiring immediate cleanup. In the process, I noticed how dirty the floors were, so I ended up mopping them. As I wrapped that up, the baby began to cry, demanding my attention.
  2. The baby is napping, which gives me a limited window of 30 minutes to an hour to tackle a laundry list of tasks: showering, tidying up toys, and doing dishes. Instead of calling you, I’m overwhelmed by the chores piling up around me.
  3. It’s nighttime, and once the baby is asleep, all I want is to unwind with something mindless on TV. Even the thought of calling you to discuss our favorite shows feels like too much effort after a long day.
  4. I fully planned to call… but then I got caught up in my to-do list, and suddenly it’s 10 PM. I really need to sleep before the baby wakes up for her nighttime feeding.
  5. I fell down the rabbit hole of social media—Facebook, Instagram, celebrity gossip sites… you name it.
  6. Sometimes, I choose to enjoy a meal in peace instead of multitasking with a phone call.
  7. My husband also wants to engage in conversation, and given our marital vows (with rings involved), I feel a certain obligation to chat with him too.
  8. I honestly can’t find my phone right now; it’s like it vanished into thin air.
  9. My boss—my toddler—is relentless. She demands playtime, singing, reading, and outings to the park. It’s hard to balance work and life when she is always in charge.
  10. I often feel like I have nothing substantial to share. I’m exhausted, and that leads to conversations like this:

You: Hey! How are you?
Me: Good, you?
You: Great! What’s new?
Me: Not much. You?
You: (Insert interesting updates here)
Me: Cool!
You: (More interesting things)
Me: That sounds great.
You: Okay, I gotta go but I’ll talk to you later.
Me: Okay, bye!

This back-and-forth leaves me thinking that I’ve become incredibly dull, and I genuinely don’t want to put you through that.
