To the Parents Who Help Me Feel Better About My Parenting

If you’re seeking reassurance in your parenting journey, consider volunteering for a school field trip. I recently accompanied my child’s second-grade class on an outing to the theater, and it was truly eye-opening. I observed numerous parents who seemed perfectly comfortable sending their children off to this special event in unbuttoned shirts, ill-fitting pants, untied shoes, and with various levels of personal hygiene. It’s a field trip, after all!

Perhaps these parents have grasped a crucial lesson that many of us have yet to learn: Kids can be messy and unpredictable, and that’s just part of the experience. To those parents, I extend my gratitude, as you have significantly eased my feelings about my own parenting practices.

So, thank you:

To the parents of the child with a noticeable amount of snot on his face: My initial reaction was to wonder if his mother had even glanced at him that morning. However, seeing that child prompted me to check my own son, only to find he also had remnants of breakfast and a little nasal residue. I may have told him to brush his teeth, but did I really look at him before we left?

To the parents of the girl who excitedly told me about her mother spending “practically all day” removing lice from her hair: I quickly secured my own hair into a ponytail, but I also felt a wave of relief regarding my own childhood experiences with lice. It’s comforting to think about the likelihood of my kids encountering that nuisance too.

To the parents of the child who shared stories about his new motor home, four-wheeler, and a ‘really big’ pool: Hearing about his family’s possessions made me feel more at ease with our own financial choices, including that short-sale from years ago. Perhaps we could arrange a playdate so our kids can enjoy each other’s toys?

To the parents of the child whose lunch consisted of a pre-packaged PB&J, fruit roll-up, and chocolate milk: Your choices have made me feel a bit superior about my own lunch packing efforts. It’s easy to feel judgy, but perhaps your child doesn’t engage in the same antics mine does.

To the parents of the child who frequently lagged behind the group: Oh wait, that was my own child. Never mind.

To the parents of the child who constantly needed water and kept asking me to hold his belongings: Your child’s behavior reassured me that it’s acceptable to encourage independence in my own child, even if he still struggles with tying his shoes occasionally.

To the parents of the child who proudly proclaimed her bad breath and displayed her dental crowns: You’ve motivated me to make sure my kids brush their teeth thoroughly tonight. I’d much rather deal with a lice situation than face a dental bill like that!

To all of these parents: Each of you, in your unique way, helped me feel more confident in my parenting. Thank you for reminding me that I’m not navigating this sticky journey alone.
