CRUCIAL THANKSGIVING UPDATE

In reflecting on the events of 2013, I’ve dubbed it The Year of Lessons.

During the inaugural Thanksgiving Project in 2011, I either mailed the gift cards personally or had donors send them directly to recipients. While this approach worked for 438 individuals, there were a few who sadly never received their cards due to minor oversights—like forgetting a stamp or misplacing an envelope. After having to overnight numerous gift cards the night before Thanksgiving, I resolved to take full control the following year.

In 2012, I opted to have cards shipped directly from the grocery store, supplemented by handwritten notes sent separately. This proved to be somewhat effective, but required two mailings, and the generic packaging from Walmart didn’t exude the warmth I intended. A more thoughtful solution was needed.

Fast forward to this year: the original plan was to revert back to handwritten cards and notes, but as the number of recipients reached 2000, that task became overwhelming. In a move I had never attempted before, I partnered with a company that specializes in card personalization. They offered to customize each card at no extra charge and provided me a great deal on printing my designed greeting card. With their capability to ship millions of cards annually, I believed I finally found a foolproof solution.

However, that was not the case.

For reasons I cannot disclose, the beautifully customized $50 Visa cards were shipped late this afternoon via USPS (refer to the image below). This is not the update I hoped to provide, but it was the only feasible option to ensure everyone received their cards. The company worked diligently with me throughout the day to find alternatives, but sadly, it just wasn’t possible.

I understand that your Thanksgiving may not unfold as planned, but I hope that you can utilize the gift card for a later Thanksgiving meal, Christmas dinner, or even for groceries—whatever might alleviate some burden in your life. The Thanksgiving Project was designed to reduce holiday stress, not amplify it, and I sincerely apologize for this unforeseen situation. For those feeling frustrated and upset, I empathize with you. Multiply that frustration by 2,700, and that’s how I feel. To those who have shown understanding, thank you for your kindness.

Amidst the chaos and disappointment, I want to acknowledge the positive outcomes: we raised over $150,000 in just a few weeks, benefiting thousands of families through the generosity of strangers.

I assure you, if you need assistance next year, I will ensure you receive it in a timely manner, even if it means delivering each card myself.
