The Challenges of Running Errands with Children

As I settled into my seatbelt in the grocery store parking lot the other day, I observed a family in the car ahead of me. They appeared to have only a couple of bags and, with a simple press of a button, the mother unlocked the doors and slid in, while her two pre-teen children followed suit. With minimal effort, she started the ignition and smoothly backed out of the space. Within moments, she was off to her next errand.

I found myself transfixed, watching the empty parking spot long after they had left. “She just got into the car,” I thought, incredulous. “No struggle, no fuss. She just drove away.”

Now, I have four children under six, and for me, getting everyone in the car resembles an elaborate circus act. It’s akin to a well-rehearsed magic show. Meanwhile, this mother appeared to effortlessly glide through the process, a stark contrast to my chaotic routine.

She didn’t have to wrangle any screaming toddlers into seats. She didn’t wrestle with multiple car seats, rebuckling those who knew how to escape while she secured the others. There were no tears, no pleading, no desperate measures. She didn’t have to navigate the perilous return of an oversized shopping cart or deal with crushed groceries.

As I stared at that spot, I couldn’t help but imagine how easy her routine must be. Perhaps she simply announced, “We’re going to the store,” and her children appeared, ready and waiting, buckled in and fully dressed. No last-minute diaper changes or packing multiple essentials.

Her garage likely didn’t resemble a battlefield. No children crawling underfoot or climbing into the trash. She didn’t have to clear out toys and clutter before settling in to drive. When she turned the key, she wasn’t battling heat and sweat.

I imagined she hasn’t recently thought, “Forget it,” and unloaded her car in frustration before even leaving the driveway. It probably hasn’t been long since she found a child asleep in the backseat and kept driving past her destination, opting for home instead.

Reflecting on my own errands, I face daily challenges, such as maneuvering a cart filled with mini kleptomaniacs snatching treats, sweating in public restrooms while managing a game of toilet-water wars, and enduring the glares of onlookers as my child throws a tantrum over passing the toy aisle. Did I mention four boys in a public restroom?

I assume that mother has faced her share of chaos and emerged unscathed. I cling to the hope that one day, I, too, will experience the bliss of effortless outings. However, I couldn’t shake the feeling that her manageable family size and the age gaps between her kids somehow made her superior in this crazy world of parenting.

Yet, despite the stress of getting my kids into the car, I cherish every moment with them. Still, the process is a close second in terror only to the dreaded bath time.
