Anticipating Your Arrival

Dear Little One,

Hello! It’s me, your mom, and I’m filled with excitement at the thought of meeting you soon. Your nursery is nearly finished in our new home. While we were sad to leave the city, we wanted to ensure that you and your older sibling have access to excellent schools. Now we have a spacious playroom, a large yard, and enough bedrooms for you, your sibling, and hopefully another little one in the future.

We’ve been eagerly waiting for you to join our family. What could possibly be taking so long? Are you being considerate to my other first-time mom friends? That’s thoughtful of you, but everyone in our circle is either expecting or already has one or two children. Our Christmas cards this year were filled with birth announcements! Rest assured, you won’t be stepping, or rather crawling, on anyone’s toes.

Are you trying to teach me patience? I admit, it’s not my strongest quality. I manage just fine with your big sibling, but a traffic jam or technical difficulties can easily test my calm. Are you going to be just like me, taking your sweet time to arrive? I’ve always been a bit of a slowpoke; Grandma often joked that I was the last one to leave school.

Do you worry that my love for your sibling might leave no room for you? That’s simply not true! My affection for your brother only enhances my excitement to welcome you. The love we have for him does not diminish the joy I feel about your arrival. We can’t wait to see the two of you grow up together.

Are you concerned that being in my tummy will make me feel unwell? We have three bathrooms in this house, and I’d gladly endure any discomfort for you. Or perhaps you’re thinking you’ll cause some back pain? That’s what prenatal yoga is for, and I’m eager to sign up!

Are you worried that I’ll be disappointed if you turn out to be a boy (which I suspect) instead of a girl (as your father hopes)? Little one, I will embrace you wholeheartedly, regardless of gender. Plus, it means I won’t have to learn the intricacies of teaching a girl about feminine hygiene!

You are always on my mind—every single day, more often than I can count. I find myself daydreaming about snuggling you after nursing, watching your first steps, and holding back tears on your first day of Kindergarten.

So, why the delay? Why haven’t I fallen pregnant yet? Some days I fear that the conception of your older sibling was a one-time miracle, leaving me to wonder if more children are in my future. I ask you to dispel these fears and join our family—there’s more than enough love to share.

Your older sibling will be starting preschool in the fall, and when they do, I dream of spending that time with you. Until then, I’ll be right here…waiting for you.

Love,
Mom
