In June of last year, my partner and I attended a Bat Mitzvah at a sleepaway camp nestled in the Poconos. We spent two days disconnected from our phones, indulging in camp cuisine, sipping bug juice, and sleeping in sleeping bags on small cot-sized beds alongside unfamiliar faces in single-sex bunks. And it was absolutely exhilarating! Sure, getting ready for the Saturday night dance party meant sharing a cramped bathroom with ten other women, all vying for space at the sole tiny mirror above the sink. But there were s’mores! And Coronas! And an unforgettable tug-of-war competition! Not to mention, I was able to sport face paint and a blue tutu all weekend, celebrating our camp spirit!
Okay, I might have gotten a bit carried away. But as this summer approaches, it will mark the fifth year that one or both of my children will be off at sleepaway camp, and I can’t deny feeling a twinge of envy as I watch that bus pull away. It seems I’m not alone in this sentiment, as evidenced by the emergence of Camp No Counselors, a company that organizes activity-filled, alcohol-infused weekends at camps across the nation specifically for adults.
Founded by Jake Thompson in 2013 after he hosted a weekend camp retreat for friends, the goal of Camp No Counselors is to provide adults with a space to let go of their everyday personas. “I recognized that much of adult life puts us in positions where we must project confidence, leaving little room for vulnerability,” he explains on the Camp No Counselors website. “Camp offered a rare opportunity to reconnect with our true selves. More individuals should have the chance to experience this.”
Upcoming Camp Sessions
If you’re interested in this unique opportunity, upcoming camp sessions are scheduled for:
- June 4-7 in Chicago
- May 28-31 and September 4-7 in New York
- August 20-23 in Nashville
- October 1-4 in Los Angeles
The cost ranges from $475 to $575, which includes roundtrip transportation, three nights of co-ed lodging, all meals and snacks, themed parties every night, and access to activities like archery, arts and crafts, softball, slip n slide, tubing, wakeboarding, and ziplining.
On the final night, campers partake in a talent show, where it’s common for participants to showcase their skills in front of a crowd of new acquaintances. And yes, there is an open bar throughout the weekend—Bloody Marys at breakfast included—for those needing a bit of liquid courage to join in on the fun.
