Navigating Parenting Clichés: Insights for New Parents

Welcoming a child into your life often invites a flood of unsolicited advice from both friends and strangers alike. Prior to the arrival of your little one, you may find that everyone feels compelled to share their “life-altering” parenting wisdom, which is often as helpful as a screen door on a submarine.

You may have noticed that much of this so-called wisdom lacks real depth and is often just recycled phrases that don’t truly resonate with the chaos of parenting (see #1). While I refrain from doling out unsolicited advice myself, I’ve compiled a list of common sayings and reinterpreted them to reflect the realities of parenting.

1. It is what it is.

However, sometimes you might not know what “it” is. In those cases, consider washing your hands if you’ve touched anything questionable.

2. Expect the unexpected.

This includes unexpected nudity. Remember, you thought changing in gym class was embarrassing? Just wait until your child bursts into a public restroom while you’re midstream.

3. This too shall pass…

And yes, that includes gas. Your infant will produce an impressive amount of gas (and you may experience some during pregnancy), which can be quite pungent.

4. Life goes on…

and so do temper tantrums, which can last for what feels like an eternity.

5. Prepare for the worst.

Expect to see yourself at your most disheveled. Seriously, when was the last time you had a shower?

6. Hope for the best.

This means the best possible night’s sleep, which is often elusive.

7. Nothing is guaranteed in life…

except for the inevitability of dirty diapers.

8. What’s yours is mine…

according to your pint-sized tyrant, who believes everything belongs to them.

9. It’s always something.

Often, it’s something absurd that triggers the tears. My child has cried for reasons such as not being able to see the moon during the day, losing her belly button in a onesie, or wanting me to remove my glasses.

10. It takes a village to raise a child…

or, if you’re in a polygamous situation, perhaps it takes more than a village.

In summary, while parenting clichés might sound familiar, they often fail to capture the true essence of the parenting experience. A mix of humor and practicality can help new parents navigate the challenges ahead.
