Our Montauk Holiday Experience

In the summer of 2012, my daughter, Sophie, who was fifteen at the time, expressed a strong desire to visit Montauk Point. Having grown up on the opposite side of Long Island, neither of us had ever ventured to this picturesque destination known for its iconic lighthouse and museum. Despite coming close on previous camping trips, we felt that a visit to this easternmost point was long overdue.

We turned our trip into a day of adventure, indulging in a delightful breakfast along the way, braving unexpected torrential downpours, and finally arriving as the skies cleared. Exploring the lighthouse, the museum, taking photos, and relaxing on the beach made us feel an immediate connection to this special place. We promised each other to return for the holiday lighting ceremony that takes place the weekend after Thanksgiving.

That Thanksgiving was particularly significant for our family. My eldest daughter, Emma, was coming home from college with her girlfriend, Mia, who would be celebrating her first holiday with our family of five. I had exciting plans laid out for the weekend. The older girls would spend quality time with my three-year-old daughter, Lily, while I prepared our Thanksgiving feast. We would share dinner with my in-laws before heading out to the movies. The next day was dedicated to Montauk, just me and the girls. Saturday would involve decorating the Christmas tree, reminiscing about ornaments while sipping hot cocoa.

While most of our plans unfolded smoothly, the Montauk trip didn’t go quite as I had anticipated. The drive took about two and a half hours, and arriving later in the day meant our time there felt fleeting. Frequent stops for bathrooms and food added stress as I worried about making it in time for the lighting. Upon arrival, we were met with frigid temperatures and biting winds. We managed to find a good spot to view the lighting and even caught a glimpse of Santa, but we didn’t linger long. I became disoriented in the dark while trying to navigate back to the car, with Lily fussing about being cold and scared.

The ride home was eventful. Lily, who was unwell with a cold and had sensory sensitivities, insisted that only I could wipe her nose. Her repeated requests of “You g’ wipe my nose?” were relentless, despite my explanations that I needed to focus on driving. Her solution was simple: if I didn’t want to drive, we could just “walk fast home.” After an hour filled with her insistence, she finally allowed one of the older girls to help her, leading to a flurry of used tissues being tossed toward the front seat, making the drive less than relaxing for me.

Once the weekend concluded, I spoke to Emma about their experience. She expressed that they had a wonderful time, and I was curious about Mia’s favorite moment. To my surprise, it turned out that the highlight of their weekend was the visit to Montauk.

“Really?” I asked, recalling the long drive, the brief visit, and the chaos during the car ride. “It was magical,” Emma insisted. The real joy stemmed from our car ride, joyfully singing Christmas songs, the stunning view of the moonlit water, our perfect timing for the lighthouse lighting, and Lily’s antics, which had become a funny memory.

As mothers, we often feel the responsibility to create festive moments. However, my experience in Montauk taught me that true holiday magic often emerges organically in the hearts of our children and their companions. All we need to do is invest time and remain open to these experiences.

In summary, our Montauk adventure reminded me that the essence of holiday magic doesn’t always lie in meticulously planned activities but often arises from shared experiences and joyful moments, however imperfect they may be.
