20 Aspirations for My Parenting Journey

As I’ve pondered the concept of a bucket list, I realized that I would like to create one specifically for my journey as a parent. This list focuses on the less obvious, yet equally crucial milestones I hope my children will reach before they venture out into the world. Here’s what I envision:

  1. Dress themselves in a way that doesn’t raise eyebrows.
  2. Remember to grab their backpack and lunch when heading to school.
  3. Avoid using their clothes as makeshift napkins.
  4. Master the art of wiping properly after bathroom use.
  5. Engage in play together without my involvement.
  6. Shower thoroughly, ensuring all shampoo and conditioner is rinsed out.
  7. Leave school with everything I sent them with eight hours earlier.
  8. Complete homework independently, without needing constant reminders.
  9. Put away their snow gear properly, rather than leaving it on the floor.
  10. Learn to lift the toilet seat.
  11. Clean their rooms before I reach my breaking point.
  12. Respond to inquiries about school with more than just “Fine” or “It sucks.”
  13. Go to bed and remain there throughout the night.
  14. Brush their teeth twice daily without being prompted or throwing a tantrum.
  15. Avoid tracking dirt through the house when they come in.
  16. Place dirty laundry in the basket, or ideally, in the laundry room.
  17. Refrain from uttering the phrase “I’m bored.”
  18. Keep their tissues and socks off the floor.
  19. Put their laundry away without being asked, and not all crammed in one drawer or hidden under the bed.
  20. Wash and put away the dishes; at this point, I’d even be satisfied if they just made it to the sink. If I’m feeling particularly ambitious, maybe the dishwasher too.

While this list may seem like a wishful dream, if people can include grand adventures like visiting the Seven Wonders of the World on their bucket lists, surely I can hope for the simple act of my child to put the cap back on the toothpaste.
