For just one day, I long to feel at ease with who I am. For one day, I wish to let go of the constant feeling of inadequacy that looms over me as a mother. For just a single day, I want to stop criticizing myself for not living up to the ideal mother I once imagined I would be. For one day, I hope to release the pressure of comparing myself to other mothers, reminding myself that they, too, face their own challenges.

For just one day, I want to silence the nagging thoughts that echo in my mind: “You’re not doing this motherhood thing correctly. You should be more compassionate. No, you need to be more consistent. You ought to be more organized. No, you should ease your expectations.” For one day, I yearn to discover a way to simply breathe. To pause and appreciate the beauty around me. To relish the small moments. To just exist.

For one day, I want to rediscover the joy in motherhood that I felt before feeling overwhelmed. A voice whispers to me, “They will grow up faster than you realize. Yes, it can be incredibly tough, but one day, you’ll miss this time.” For just a day, I wish I could perceive myself and my family through the eyes of others—seeing us as something truly special.

For one day, I wish to learn how to be a friend to myself, just as I strive to be for others. The kind of friend who listens, reassures, comforts, and recognizes the good. Why is it so tough to show myself kindness?

For just one day, I hope to accomplish all these small yet profoundly challenging tasks. Because if I could manage it for just a day, perhaps I could sustain it for a lifetime.
