This past Mother’s Day was pleasant, albeit a bit hectic. I volunteered at my local church, supervising children aged three to six, which meant arriving by 9 AM. Following that, we enjoyed a lovely picnic lunch and a short hike at a nearby vineyard. The weather was absolutely perfect. I managed to do a load of laundry and prepare salads for both myself and my mother before heading to church.
However, as I scrolled through Facebook, I noticed friends showcasing extravagant Mother’s Day celebrations. While I shared half the day with my mom, they spent entire weekends honoring motherhood, and a wave of frustration washed over me. After all, I already share my bed, meals, and precious moments with my children. Shouldn’t there be a day that truly centers on me? But then, I remembered my own mother.
Many of my friends have lost their mothers, while others have parents who live far away or are simply unable to spend time with their daughters and grandchildren. I feel fortunate to have my mother, who undoubtedly deserves recognition and celebration.
But wouldn’t it be even better if we each had a dedicated day? Especially while I’m still in the thick of parenting, wiping tiny bottoms and managing endless schedules.
I discovered that Grandparents Day falls on September 7 this year—a date I had to look up. Established by Congress in 1978, this observance is relatively new and merits greater recognition. I’ve added a reminder on my phone to collaborate with my children’s schools this August to create crafts for Grandparents Day. The school year will still be fresh, and the kids will be eager to participate, having just celebrated Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week without the usual end-of-year fatigue weighing them down.
Next year, I plan to adjust my volunteering schedule so that I’m not working on Mother’s Day, a day that should truly be mine.
Are you on board, fellow moms?
