During a recent coffee meetup, I found myself completely absorbed in an engaging quiz led by Emma Langston, where she assessed which of her Four Tendencies—Obliger, Questioner, Upholder, or Rebel—I represented. I discovered that I am an Obliger, and we delved into how this tendency influences my ability to establish and maintain habits. Emma’s latest book, Better Than Before, is filled with insightful strategies for cultivating positive habits and eliminating negative ones based on our unique character types. This book is sure to become a favorite gift for friends and family, as it’s enlightening to uncover your own tendency and recognize those of others, revealing how these classifications can both support and challenge us in everyday life.
In celebration of her new release, we created our own quiz for Emma—the Mid Questionnaire—which, while it doesn’t pinpoint specific personality traits, certainly allows us to learn more about her.
- What’s something you want to learn how to do?
I’ve always had a quiet desire to start a podcast. - What’s a trip you’ve been meaning to take?
I would love to revisit Paris, a city I greatly admire. - Who do you owe a thank you note to?
I owe a heartfelt thank you to Jack Thompson, who encouraged me to pursue podcasting. He believed I would be a great fit for the medium, and I was thrilled to dive in! I’ve just launched “Happier with Emma Langston,” a podcast focusing on happiness and habit formation alongside my sister, Sarah. Jack made the entire journey enjoyable and fulfilling—thank you, Jack! - You’re 12 years old. What are you doing on a Friday night?
If memory serves me right, Friday nights were for watching The Love Boat and Fantasy Island. - Who did you make your first mix tape for? What songs were on it?
I confess, it was for myself—a collection of tunes for jogging. I took great joy in creating running mixes over the years. - What’s the one childhood story about you that you’re sick of hearing at family gatherings?
Every Christmas, my sister and I would choose a unique ornament for our tree collection. I still have every ornament! However, years ago, I accidentally broke her cherished “partridge in a pear tree” ornament while trying to adjust its position. This incident has become a running joke in our family, but I must admit it’s now part of our holiday traditions. - What advice would you give your 25-year-old self?
“Embrace who you are.” - What’s the one thing you make better than anybody?
I excel at making scrambled eggs. - What’s your motto? Or if you don’t have one, what’s your theme song?
My motto is “Be Emma.” I also believe in the saying, “The days are long, but the years are short.” Of all my creations, I believe the one-minute video, “The Years Are Short,” resonates most powerfully with others. - What’s the one movie or TV show that makes you feel better?
The Office (American version) never fails to make me laugh, no matter how many times I watch it.
