Yesterday marked a significant milestone as Oliver turned five—an event I did not authorize, but nevertheless, it transpired. However, my little one had a simple request for his birthday: an ice cream cake. As any loving parent would do, I obliged.

My partner, Tom, often reminisces about a dessert from his childhood known as “Yodel Pie.” This nostalgic treat typically comprised just three ingredients: Yodels, ice cream, and hot fudge. While it sounded delightful, I was convinced I could elevate it further. Instead of settling for store-bought hot fudge, I opted for a homemade version. I also had vanilla ice cream and Oreos on hand, so I crushed the Oreos and infused them into the ice cream, creating a dessert packed with far more Oreo goodness than any store-bought version could claim. Additionally, it was certainly rich enough to qualify as a heart attack in a bowl.

I wish everyone could experience this cake; it’s simply remarkable. If you’re interested in trying it for yourself, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Two boxes of Yodels (or any Swiss snack cakes), each sliced into six pieces
  • Two gallons of ice cream in your preferred flavor, softened
  • Hot fudge; while you could use two jars, I believe the homemade version truly enhances the flavor. It only takes five minutes to prepare.

Homemade Hot Fudge Recipe:

Simmer one container of sweetened condensed milk, one bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips, one unsweetened square of baking chocolate, and one tablespoon of butter until melted. Stir in one tablespoon of vanilla. That’s all there is to it!

Next, layer the ingredients: start with the Yodels, then add the ice cream, followed by the hot fudge. Repeat these layers until you reach the top of your bowl. Sprinkle any leftover chocolate flakes from slicing on top and place the creation in the freezer for a couple of hours to solidify.

The kids thoroughly enjoyed it, even Tom! They have already requested this cake for every birthday this year, which is perfectly fine with me because it’s virtually impossible to ruin. Happy birthday to my sweet Oliver.
