At the End of the Day, It Feels Like I’ve Accomplished Nothing

As I prepared for bed, I strolled through my home, turning off lights and ensuring the doors were secured. My gaze fell upon the laundry room, where a mountain of clothes overflowed from the basket onto the floor. There was a load in the washing machine that I had neglected to transfer to the dryer. I’ll handle that tomorrow.

In the kitchen, the dishwasher stood ajar, revealing a stack of clean dishes awaiting organization. Meanwhile, the sink was brimming with dirty dishes, which I would need to rinse and load once the clean ones found their place. I’ll do that tomorrow, too.

As I navigated through the dimly lit living room, I stepped on scattered toys, a reminder of a day filled with chaos. The floor was entirely hidden beneath an avalanche of puzzle pieces, toy cars, pillows, and blankets. I’ll tidy up tomorrow.

The hallway felt gritty beneath my bare feet, remnants of dirt the kids had brought in after playing outside. Crumbs from snack time littered the ground. I’ll vacuum when I have a moment tomorrow.

At the base of the stairs, I noticed movement; it was my dog, acting strangely. A quick inspection revealed she had gotten into a mess. Back to the kitchen I went for scissors to trim the stuck fur. I’ll give her a bath tomorrow.

Finally reaching my bedroom, I heard my 3-year-old crying. He had an accident due to an overly generous drink before bed. I quickly changed him, draped a blanket over the wet sheet, and told him to settle down. I’ll change the sheets tomorrow.

It may seem like I accomplished nothing today, but in reality, I tackled a great deal of work. I washed, dried, folded, and organized all the laundry. However, the kids’ muddy escapades left me with more to do. Dinner and bedtime routines distracted me, and I forgot about the laundry in the washing machine.

I emptied the dishwasher and put away the clean dishes. After rinsing the dirty ones, the sheer volume of dishes from the night before meant I was already preparing to run it again. Tonight’s dinner dishes awaited rinsing in the sink after the clean ones were dealt with.

I picked up toys multiple times, but the moment my partner arrived home, the kids were thrilled. They immersed themselves in puzzles and car races, even building a blanket fort. Now, it looked like a toy store had exploded in the living room.

I vacuumed every room today, but the kids’ outdoor adventures brought dirt right back in. Snack time crumbs added to the chaos, and by the time I hit the pillow, the floors were dirty again.

I bathed the dog, who had desperately needed it, leaving her smelling fresh. But I neglected to trim her fur, leading to yet another mess later on.

I changed the sheets, washed, dried, and replaced them on the beds. However, my 3-year-old’s late-night snack of salty chips prompted a water binge, resulting in another bedwetting incident.

So, while it may seem like I achieved very little, I actually completed a lot today. Yet, as bedtime approached, it felt as though it all went unnoticed. Tomorrow, I suspect I will find myself in the same boat again.
