To my nurse,

Past, present, and those yet to meet.

I don’t claim to fully grasp the complexities of your role or the extensive list of responsibilities that come with it every day. I know that many of these tasks you eagerly embraced, while others may seem like challenges you wouldn’t wish on anyone, not even your worst enemy. The level of physical, emotional, and mental endurance required in your profession is something I can only begin to imagine. The emotional rollercoaster you experience in a single shift is likely overwhelming; moments of frustration can swiftly flip to those of joy as you enter a new patient’s room or navigate a fresh hallway.

I understand you may wish for us to comprehend the challenging nature of your work and the toll it takes on you personally, as well as on your loved ones at home. However, as one of your many patients, I have something to share with you too.

There was a time when I recognized your efforts amid the routine tasks you performed during each shift. While I appreciated your service, I didn’t fully understand the depth of your role. It wasn’t until I faced a situation that couldn’t be captured in notes or digital records that I began to truly see you.

During my recent D&C after a miscarriage, I experienced firsthand the profound emotional support you offer, which extends far beyond mere words of sympathy. On that fateful day, I was understandably fragile and vulnerable. As I managed to keep my composure, you began the necessary paperwork and posed your questions. When I uttered the words “D&C following a miscarriage,” your face reflected a deep, compassionate sadness. You offered me your condolences, and when you determined I was managing, you continued with the mundane questions.

When my partner stepped out to take a call, you gently informed me that you had some challenging inquiries to make. You asked where I would like the remains of my baby to go if they could salvage anything. In that moment, I fell apart. With every fiber of my being, I broke down.

I was astounded by your swift response. You climbed onto my bed, wrapped me in your arms, and cried with me for several minutes, wiping away my tears as we prayed together. In that moment, you were a stranger who became my guardian angel, representing the maternal comfort I desperately needed.

Though our encounter lasted only thirty minutes, your impact on me was profound, and I’m sure you were unaware of the lasting impression you made. Even five years later, I can vividly picture your face. At a time when I was struggling to see any light in the world, you embodied true kindness, empathy, and the resilience of the human spirit. My experience with you was my first genuine encounter with a nurse, and it opened my eyes to the depth of your role.

Since that day, I see you, dear nurse. I see all that you do. I am thankful for not just the routine duties you perform, like taking my blood pressure, but for the countless patients you have comforted, cried with, prayed for, and stood by during their darkest moments. Your ability to be present in the vulnerability of others is awe-inspiring.
